Tongue Scraper: An Essential Guide

BY Indu Aroa3 min read • February 25, 2026

Big changes in health often begin with the smallest rituals. In Ayurveda, tongue scraping is one of those quiet, powerful daily practices that supports digestion, freshens the mouth, and gives instant feedback about your diet.

If you’ve ever wondered why your tongue looks coated in the morning, Ayurveda has a lot to say. That simple white or yellow film is more than “just morning breath” - it’s a window into your digestive fire.

Here are three simple essentials for using a tongue scraper well:

1. Choose the Right Material

  • Copper Scraper: Ideal if you notice buildup, teeth marks (scalloping), or discoloration on your tongue. Copper is antimicrobial, helps effectively remove toxins, and pacifies kapha and pitta dosha.
  •  Steel Scraper: Best for tongues with redness, patches, or cracks. Steel is gentle, yet effective, making it suitable for sensitive conditions and pacifies vata and pitta dosha.

Tip: Stick your tongue out each morning to assess its condition and choose accordingly. Do yourself a favor and get a pair or better check the Essential Ayurveda Bundle to kickstart your self-care routine.

2. Steps Matter

  • When to Use: Always scrape your tongue before brushing your teeth to remove buildup and bacteria that accumulate overnight.
  • How to Use: Stick out your tongue fully. Hold the scraper with one handle in each hand. Gently scrape from the back to the front of the tongue using light pressure. Rinse the scraper after each pass and repeat 4–5 times.

Pro Tip: If you experience a gag reflex, try starting from the middle of the tongue, breathing deeply through your nose, or experimenting with side-to-side motions.

3. Tongue Scraper Hygiene

  • After each use, rinse it under hot water and wipe it clean.
  • Once a week, wash it with soapy water or place it in the dishwasher like other utensils.
  • Replace it if it shows signs of rust or discoloration (e.g., greenish tint).

Special Tip: If you’re new to tongue scraping and find it uncomfortable, placing a small amount of salt on your tongue can help reduce sensitivity by stimulating specific nerves.
