Menopause needs education and preparation, not fear and avoidance!
Let me get this out of the way first: Menopause needs education and preparation, not fear and avoidance! Often seen as a dreadful list of changes in the body, menopause can become manageable as per Yogic and Ayurvedic wisdom. (That is good news and we need good news!)
Here are the top 5 Myths on Menopause that must be busted…like …yesterday!
Myth No.1: Menopause = Suffering
Menopause is a stage in a woman’s life, not the death of womanhood. The good news is it does mark the end of menstrual cramps, headaches, PMS, etc. If we prioritize self, it can be a time for reflection, empowerment, and self-care practices. Most of the unwelcome symptoms can be prevented and/or managed.
Myth No.2: Menopause = Weight Gain
Hormonal changes alone don’t necessarily cause weight gain. Instead, it’s usually related to aging, as well as lifestyle and genetic factors. We must make changes to acclimate to the transition. If we prioritize sleep, apply Ayurvedic principles of diet and digestion, include Yoga practices that support the rhythm of internal organs, prioritize meditation, and rest to combat stress, it can help keep one at their healthy weight.
Myth No.3: Menopause = Sleepless Nights
As per Ayurveda, from the age of 50, one enters the vata stage of life, affecting quality and quantity of sleep. Menopause alone is not associated with changes in sleep disturbances. Both Ayurveda and Yoga consider hot flashes and night sweats a consequence of high pitta, variable agni, and blockage/redirection in the flow of apana prana. Yoga and Ayurveda offer solutions, too.
Myth No.4: Menopause = Lost Focus
Brain fog, poor focus, deterioration in verbal memory can also be connected with fatigue, sleep disturbance, and aging. Menopause alone is not the causative factor for lost focus. The good news is, even if one experiences it during the menopausal stage, it is temporary. Ayurveda connects it to vata disturbance and Yoga to a restless, distracted, and over-occupied mind.
Myth No.5: Menopause = No Solution
Menopause is not a time for feeling helpless and hopeless. Menopause is seen as a stage of life and not a disease, situation, or condition to be dreaded. If one prepares for it and makes changes, most of the unwanted symptoms have a solution. Yoga and Ayurveda offer accessible, effective, and pragmatic solutions, practices, and rituals for empowerment, clarity, and strength.

Big changes in health often begin with the smallest rituals. In Ayurveda, tongue scraping is one of those quiet, powerful daily practices that supports digestion, freshens the mouth, and gives instant feedback about your diet.
